Can the optional files be used on their own without the main file? I assume that if they're just replacers, it should be fine, but I thought I'd ask.

In hindsight, I could have just looked at the download numbers and realized this was obviously the case.

Not really, the count is higher for the optionals because they have never been updated. The main file has been updated more recently (and was basically made redundant)

If you are playing in hardcore mode with TTW 3.3+ you will die if you go into the chamber. This mod just cleans up some narration and applies that behavior to non-hardcore runs as well. So yes use a companion, the game pretty clearly tells you that going into the chamber is going to kill you

I already did. It's basically integrated though, all this does now is remove some of the voice overs in certain situations for tonal consistency

Er, you say this mod "Restores the ending of Fallout 3 that was changed in Broken Steel. The player no longer miraculously survives turning on the purifier, and has to sacrifice Sarah or bring a companion to continue."
But that premise seems totally incorrect. What companion?? For in the original FO3 ending, no one except Sarah will agree to go in your place! Only with Broken Steel can you at least get one of the rad-resistant followers (Fawkes, Charon, Sargeant RL3) to go in. From what you've explained thus far, you haven't actually restored the original FO3 ending at all, but more accurately created a mod that kills whoever goes into the purifier, but without explaining whether that's still limited to you or Sarah (as per FO3), you or Sarah or Rad-resistant followers (as per Broken Steel), or you or Sarah or ANY companion (as apparently per your mod description). Please explain.
Also you say you hated how in the original FO3 ending that "Lyons dies if she goes in, but you don't? It doesn't make any sense at all." - I'm afraid that is simply incorrect, however you meant it. For whoever went in died and even if you sent Lyons in your place, while the original FO3 game ending essentially calls you coward for doing so, it doesn't actually say you survive the incident either!! One could say the original FO3 ending left that possibility open but if anything it insinuates you still also died (except as a coward, or dying evil if installing FEV, etc) because however one decided to end the incident, pre-Broken Steel, the game clearly said "so ends the story of the Lone Wanderer." You alone have extrapolated your survival from that statement, but "so ends the story" could (and perhaps more likely does) mean "so ends your life's journey" - i.e., you died instantly if you went in, or died very shortly after of your wounds/radiation if Sarah went in your place.
Indeed, the Broken Steel add-on makes my interpretation of the original FO3 ending far more likely than yours - for with Broken Steel even if you activate the purifier and Sarah stays outside - she's still almost killed too and is left in a long coma that she only later pulls through at all because she's the best of the best, and even then only because her dad's also the boss who throws every resource at pulling you both through it, and even then it's deemed a miracle. So one can safely assume that if the player had sent Sarah into the purifier, Elder Lyons (pre-Broken Steel) would not have been so concerned about you and indeed maybe blamed you for her death and left you to slowly die in your cowardly irradiated coma - or at best put you out of your misery - but (pre-Broken Steel) by the time it was safe to re-enter they'd have most likely found you also dead anyway.

That's a lot of words lol.
You don't seem to understand what the mod does. In the original fo3 ending, whoever goes in dies (as indicated in the video that got cut out of the ending where the player is a f***ing ash pile). In BS, Sarah still dies if she goes in, but the player just doesn't (for no reason). This restores that functionality and the original video where the player is an ash pile.
This mod doesn't remove the extra endings added by broken steel for sending your companions in, but it does restore the removed ending of the player dying.
Therefore the mod is named accurately.

This is the fallout New vegas Version of Nexus, why is this mod hear? and not in the Fallout 3 version? I am confused, WTF is this?

Because Fallout TTW (Tale of Two Wastelands) is based on Fallout: New Vegas and not Fallout 3 :)

It adds the F3 files in NV folders and runs from the NV.exe and engine :) Like a big mod

So what happens in the TTW version if I step into the chamber and die? The game is over and I can't go on to play NV?

Fawkes, Charron, and RL-3 are the only companions that can activate the purifier, right? Everyone else refuses when asked, right?
Could I request an optional that restores the origional dialogue for Fawkes, Charron, and RL-3 to refuse to activate the purifier? That way a True Sacrifice is needed to end Fallout 3. I know it may seems dumb since those companions are rad proof but they were originally written to deny the player so the player would make a hard choice, to follow in your dad's footsteps or to be a coward.
You could name the optional "Sara Lyons Must Die" lol
Alternatively you could also make a optional (with the recommendations above) that has the player live if they activate the purifier but the acquire a negative perk. Like -100 hp or something. That way the choice is less definitive if choosing to self sacrifice. Instead you have some sort of consequence for not sending in Lyons.
Anyways, thanks for the mod. It will definitely be a part of my LO.
