Prince William says he and his married woman Catherine "could not be happier" to welcome their first child, after the duchess gave nativity to a boy this morning.
The baby boy, who is third in line to the throne, was born at 4:24pm London time (i:24am AEST) and weighed 8 pounds six ounces (3.8kg).
An official announcement was posted in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace, as excited crowds gathered outside to gloat.
"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news," said a statement issued from the duke and duchess'due south official residence Kensington Palace.
"Her Majestic Highness and her child are both doing well and volition remain in hospital overnight."
The duchess was taken to London's St Mary's Infirmary on Mon morning (local fourth dimension) when she went into labour.
She gave birth in the hospital'southward Lindo Fly, where Princess Diana gave nascence to William and his brother Harry.

"In more than recent times, Prince William demonstrated deep compassion when he met with families in Victoria who had lost everything during the Black Saturday bushfires of February 2009.
"We share in the joy of the royal family unit, particularly Prince Charles on the nativity of his grandson and Queen Elizabeth II on the birth of her slap-up grandchild.
"This is a happy day for our close friends in Great britain and the Commonwealth."
Later, Mr Rudd said he would be sending the royal baby a Mem Fob book, titled Ten Niggling Fingers And X Little Toes, and naming a bilby enclosure after him at Taronga Zoo.
He added at that place would also be a $10,000 grant in the baby'southward honour to assistance save the bilby.
"We'll proper name the enclosure for the bilby after the prince, bailiwick to the agreement of the Taronga Park Zoo authorities and I'm sure Barry O'Farrell the Premier might come up forth with that," he said.

Usa president Barack Obama was among the world leaders also congratulating the couple, saying he and his married woman Michelle wished the regal couple "all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings".
